The DS-160, section by section

The DS-160 is long, it times out, and it cannot be meaningfully corrected after submission. Preparing before you open it is the difference between one evening and three.

The short version

Save your Application ID at the start. Without it you cannot get back into a partially completed form.
The session times out after about 20 minutes of inactivity. Save to file, or lose the page you were on.
The photo upload is checked automatically: square, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, under 240 kB.

Before you open the form

Gather everything first, because the form does not let you wander off and come back easily. You need your passport, your travel dates if you have them, your address history and employment history for the last several years, the names and dates of birth of immediate family, and details of previous US travel.

You also need the address of where you will stay and, for many categories, information about who is paying for the trip. If a US-based person or company is involved, have their full address and phone number rather than a half-remembered version.

Pick the right embassy or consulate at the start. The form asks where you will apply, and that choice determines the appointment system you will use afterward. Changing it later means redoing work.

The Application ID and the timeout

The moment you begin, the system issues an Application ID. Write it down. It is the only way back into an incomplete application, together with the answer to your security question, and losing it means starting from a blank form.

The session times out after roughly 20 minutes of inactivity, and the warning is easy to miss if you have stepped away. Use the save-to-file option if you are working across sessions, and save deliberately rather than trusting the browser.

Answer in English using Roman characters, even where the underlying information is in another alphabet. The form rejects other character sets, which is a common source of stalled progress on the personal information pages.

The photo upload

You upload a digital photo as part of the form, and the system checks it automatically. It must be square, between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, in JPEG format, and under 240 kB. It must have been taken within the last six months and reflect your current appearance.

The content rules are the same as a US passport photo: full face, front view, plain white or off-white background, neutral expression or a natural closed-mouth smile, both eyes open, no glasses, no hats except daily-worn religious head coverings, and no other person in the frame.

Most upload failures are geometry, not content. A photo taken abroad at a local shop is frequently 35 × 45 mm, which is not square, and cropping a rectangle to a square usually pushes the head outside the required size band at the same time. If you are applying from a country that uses the European format, ask specifically for a US visa photo — or produce one against the US specification.

After you submit

Print the confirmation page. The barcode on it is what the consulate scans, and you will not be seen without it. A photo of it on your phone is not a substitute at most posts.

Corrections after submission are limited. Small errors are usually raised at the interview, but a significant mistake generally means completing a new DS-160 and bringing both confirmation pages. It is far cheaper to reread the review page carefully than to fix it later.

If the photo upload failed and you proceeded without it, you must bring a printed 2 × 2 inch photo to the interview. That is a legitimate fallback rather than a failure, but it means arriving with a physical print in hand, so do not leave it to the morning of.
