Global Entry or TSA PreCheck?

These two programs are constantly confused, and the choice is simpler than it looks: Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, so the question is only whether you cross international borders often enough to want the rest of it.

What each one does
TSA PreCheck is about departure. It gives you a dedicated security lane at participating US airports where you generally keep your shoes, belt and light jacket on and leave laptops and liquids in your bag. It applies to domestic flights and to the US-departure leg of international ones.
Global Entry is about arrival. It gives you expedited clearance through US customs and immigration when returning from abroad, using kiosks or a facial-comparison process instead of the general queue.
Global Entry membership includes TSA PreCheck benefits. That is the crux of the decision — you are not choosing between two benefits, you are choosing between one and both.
Which one to apply for
If you leave the country even once or twice a year, apply for Global Entry. The price difference over five years is small and it covers both situations. The customs queue at a major US airport after a long-haul flight is where the value becomes obvious.
If you never fly internationally, PreCheck alone is sufficient and is a simpler application. There is no passport requirement and enrollment centers are far more numerous than Global Entry interview locations.
Both are five-year memberships. Many travel credit cards reimburse the application fee for one or the other, which is worth checking before you pay — the reimbursement usually covers Global Entry, making the cheaper option effectively free.
The application, and the passport requirement
Both start with an online application and a background check. PreCheck adds an in-person appointment for fingerprints and document verification. Global Entry adds a conditional approval followed by an interview with a CBP officer.
Global Entry requires a valid passport. Not a passport card — a passport book, machine readable, valid at the time of your interview and while you are a member. If yours is close to expiring, renew it before you apply, because a member with an expired passport has a membership they cannot fully use.
Global Entry interview appointments have historically been the bottleneck, with waits of months at busy locations. Enrollment on Arrival lets conditionally approved applicants complete the interview when landing from an international trip at participating airports, which frequently turns a months-long wait into a fifteen-minute detour.
Keeping it current
Update your passport details in your Trusted Traveler Programs account whenever you get a new passport. Failing to do this is the most common reason a member gets sent to the regular line — the system checks against the document on file.
You can renew your membership starting a year before it expires, and benefits generally continue while a timely renewal is pending. Set a reminder, because a lapse means reapplying rather than renewing.
Both programs can be revoked for violations, including things travelers do not think of as violations — bringing prohibited agricultural items through customs is a classic. The programs are built on a low-risk assessment, and they treat it seriously.
