The interview is short — often a few minutes — and it is mostly a conversation. The documents are what make the difference between a few minutes and a return trip.
The short version
- The DS-160 confirmation page with its barcode is non-negotiable. No barcode, no interview.
- Bring a printed 2 × 2 inch photo even if your upload succeeded. It costs nothing and solves a whole category of problem.
- Consulates have strict rules on what you may bring inside — most ban bags and electronics, with no storage available.
The core documents
Your passport, valid for the required period and with at least one blank page. The DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode. Your appointment confirmation. Proof that the visa fee was paid. And a printed 2 × 2 inch photo meeting the specification.
The photo is worth carrying even when the DS-160 upload worked. If the consulate has any issue with the uploaded image, the person who has a compliant print in their folder is finished in five minutes and the person who does not is coming back another day.
Beyond that, bring what supports your specific category: an I-20 for a student visa, an approval notice for a petition-based visa, an invitation letter for a business trip. Take the list from the instructions of the specific consulate you are attending — requirements vary by post more than people expect.
Supporting evidence
For visitor visas, the underlying question is whether you intend to return home. Evidence that speaks to that is useful: employment, property, family ties, enrollment in study, a business you run. Bring it organized rather than in a heap.
Do not bring a suitcase of paper. Consular officers work through a high volume of interviews and will ask for what they want. A thick folder is not persuasive on its own, and hunting through it under time pressure works against you.
Financial evidence should be genuine and explicable. A recently inflated bank balance is a familiar pattern and it reads as exactly what it is. Consistent, ordinary finances are more convincing than an impressive number that appeared last month.
On the day
Check the consulate's security rules before you leave. Most prohibit bags, laptops, large electronics, food and liquids, and most have no storage — so anything you cannot bring in is a problem you have to solve on the street. Arrive with a folder and a phone, and check whether even the phone is allowed.
Arrive early but not excessively so. Many posts will not admit you long before your appointment, which means waiting outside regardless of the weather. Fifteen to thirty minutes before is usually right.
The interview itself is generally brief. Answer directly and truthfully, keep answers to what is asked, and do not rehearse a script — consistency with what you wrote on the DS-160 matters far more than eloquence.
Afterwards
If approved, your passport is retained for visa printing and returned by courier or collection, typically within a few working days. Do not book non-refundable travel for the day after your interview.
You may be told your case needs administrative processing. This is routine, it is not a refusal, and it has no reliable published timeline. Plan around it if you are told it applies.
If refused, you are given the reason in writing, usually by reference to a section of the law. That reference tells you whether reapplying makes sense and what would need to be different — read it rather than guessing at what went wrong.
